205 Rare Species on Display in Rare Species & Novelties Exhibition
at Royal Flora Expo in Thailand
Chiang Mai, Thailand-December 2, 2006
From today till December 11, 2006, 205 species of rare plants and novelties are on display in “Rare Species & Novelties Exhibition,” which is one of the topics of “Revolving Indoor Exhibitions” of “Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006,” International Horticultural Exposition for His Majesty the King (November 1, 2006 – January 31, 2007, in Chiang Mai, Thailand.)
Mr. Adisak Sreesunpagit, Director-General of Department of Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the organizer of the expo said that the exhibition was divided into three categories, namely peculiar plants, rare plants and new plants variety.

Peculiar plants of 40 species are on display with their uncommon shapes, sizes, tastes, colors and scents, including abnormal trees that normally grow with different physical appearances. For example, “Choy Nang Ram” that dances when it hears music; Pilea sp. which is a tree that releases smoke when sunlight touches it; Ceriscoides turgida [Roxb.] Tirveng which shivers when touched, and Stephania suberosa whose body looks like a human face.
120 species of rare plants are on exhibit, composed of endangered species, nearly-extinct plants and plants that are found in one area only. |

Among the local rare plants, rare plants from overseas are also on display. For instance, “Dracaena draco” or “Draco Tree” from Canary Islands, Spain, is also on exhibit. Furthermore, “Agave Victoria-reginae” from Mexico and “Adenia glob bosa” From Kenya.
45 species of novelties are on display, including those which are newly discovered in Thailand, new species of the world, and new mutated plants.
Apart from the exhibited items, there are concurrent activities held during the exhibition, everyday between 14.00 – 15.00 hrs. Also, seminars on rare plants and novelties are also held daily, from 15.30 - 16.30 hrs. conducted by experts on the subject.
“Rare Species & Novelties Exhibition” is part of “Revolving Indoor Exhibitions” of the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 exposition in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Each topic of the indoor exhibitions lasts between 9 to 13 days. The next exhibition is “Photographic Exhibition” (December 9, 2006 – January 7, 2007,) for those who love the miracles of horticultural and expo photographs, and “Vegetables & Fruits Exhibition” (December 29, 2006 – January 7, 2007,) to showcase excellence and new discovery in vegetables and fruits. |
