WATERMELON (Taeng Mo)
Citrullus vulgaris Schard.
Botanical family: Cucurbitaceae
Season: All year round
Geographic area: Principally grown in the provinces of Roi Et and Yasothon in Northeastern Thailand and Ratchaburi and Samut Sakhon in Central Thailand
Originating in Africa, watermelons have been introduced to tropical and sub-tropical regions worldwide by ancient sea-farers and traders centuries ago.
With 95 per cent water content, the highest of any fruit, watermelons are very juicy and refreshing, with a moderate to sweet taste.
The fruit is large, round or oval shaped, with a thick skin. The two main varieties of watermelon found in Thailand are:
- Sugar Baby
The red variety is globular in shape with a dark green skin and sweet succulent flesh that is noticeably light and crispy in texture. Flat black seeds are embedded in the pulp.
- Yellow Baby
The yellow variety with alternating dark and light-green stripes has sweet and juicy yellow flesh, reminiscent of the honey-dew melon. Flat black seeds are also embedded in the pulp.
Watermelons are usually sliced lengthwise with a knife into 6 wedges. The blade is first used to cut between flesh and skin, then crosswise to slice the flesh into juicy triangular pieces. Watermelons grown in Thailand are renowned for their flavor and texture.

Rich in vitamin A, watermelon is an essential ingredient in fruit platters, makes a wonderful juice and is occasionally eaten with a squeeze of fresh lime or dipped in salt. The seeds are roasted for a popular snack.
Given its size and thickness of skin, watermelon is one of the most popular fruits for carving elaborate designs. |
