INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON ORNAMENTAL PLANTS
International Workshop on Ornamental Plants
8-11 January 2007
Objectives
To promote and encourage agriculturists, growers, and other interested persons to pay interest in developing and improving the production of high quality flowers and ornamental plants of various kinds in order to gain acceptance and larger demand of the domestic and international markets.
Ornamental Plants in the Context of Society
Our ornamental plants do not live in just the context presented. Among the ways in which we perceive them are their uses in decorating homes, businesses and public places, as landscape elements, as environmental modifiers, as subjects of magazines and books, and as products to be marketed. Ornamental plants have increasingly come under fire for invasive characteristics. Others have defined ornamentals in light of their “nativeness” versus having originated elsewhere. In human terms, our ornamental plants have contributed to emotions, meanings, therapy, hobby interests, and to leisure activity.
The plant breeders have contributed improved varieties while scrambling gene sets and producing materials that scarcely resemble their wild progenitors. Culture and management horticulturists have learned how to propagate, nurture, modify, and manipulate ornamental plants for a variety of uses that were not initially seen in their starting materials. A few ornamentals have become the targets of intense study of their genes.
The contributions that ornamentals make to the well-being of humans are difficult to measure. Agencies that compile figures on food and fiber crops do not often extend their efforts to the vast and diverse range of ornamental plants. Consider that in addition to the value of the plant itself, the associated aspects of installing and maintaining ornamental plants often contributes many times over to the economies of nations. Even where figures are collected, they are mostly for flower crops and the bedding annuals industry with little attention to other plant groups: turf, ground covers, shrubs, and trees.

- Genetic Resources and Breeding
- Biotechnology
- Cultural Practices and Physiology
- Post-harvest Technology
- Plant Protection
- Post-Harvest Technology and Packaging
- Globalization of Flowers and Ornamental Plants
- Potential of Flowers and Ornamental Plants
